I don’t have a green thumb. My thumb is very, very brown. My basil plant died a slow and painful death. Anyone that has been to my house knows what basil plant I am talking about. It is the one with some sticks protruding out of the dirt and a measly little leaf at the top of one of them. It was a sad time.
This spring I am determined to redeem myself! I triumphantly made my way to the gardening section of Lowes. I chose 4 herbs for my little herb garden
(Basil, Rosemary, Dill and Lavender) along with 4 decorative planters. Off we go!
After we got home, I realized that the planters I got did not have a draining hole in the bottom of it. Fail. Steve came galloping in on his steed, power drill in hand, saving the day.
This was a slightly messy/loud process. I don’t think our neighbors appreciated it. Sorry! The clay went everywhere and the enamel on the inside of the pots chipped out. Oh well…
I saw this nifty little trick on Pinterest of adding a coffee filter to the bottom of the planter so the dirt doesn’t go everywhere and the water can still drain out. I don’t know much about planting, but that seems like a fabulous idea.
Next, I filled the pots half way with Miracle Gro’s Potting Mix and then added Miracle Gro’s Seed Starting Potting Mix, making sure to place the seed 1/4 of an inch below the surface. I figured by the time the roots get down to the Potting Mix, the plant will be a little more mature and can handle the big boy stuff. Like a baby switching to solid food. Sounds good in theory, right??
Here are the little guys at home. The stair landing gets a TON of sun, so it is the perfect place for these little herbs, which require full sun.
To remind myself which container is which, I used a dry erase marker to mark the pots. Because they are enamel, the marker comes right off!
And while we are looking at the close up, how much do you love the white planters??! I am in love! This green is also popping up in a bunch of places in my house… master bedroom, dining room, and now the stair landing. Do I sense a theme coming on?
